Day 3: Road-Tripping Marlborough Sounds-Havelock-Nelson

Marlborough Sounds

Marlborough Sounds

In the subdued bluffs of Northern South Island, Marlborough Sounds awaits unearthing of its sunken basins between Cooks Straits and Tasman Bay. The intact wedges of landscapes create dramatic panorama that comprises of rugged cliffs drowning into azure open seas which makes this segment an ideal relaxation spot for nature lovers. There are numerous resorts to stay for a few days for those craving quiet and peace.

Marlborough Sounds is also globally acknowledged wine paradise, famous for its wines production from Sauvignon Blanc grapes. One can really sense the extraordinary quality, flavours and smoothness of wines as its different from rest of the world.

Queen Charlotte Drive

Most compelling views of Marlborough sounds begin on Queen Charlotte drive between Picton and Havelock (30km drive). Picton is also an amazing venue to grab a bite with views of ocean dipped vales full of floral decor.

Quick tip: If you prefer a summer track or cycling then deviate on Kenepuru road from Linkwater or Anakiwa to see Onahau bay and further till Bay of many coves to see Eatwells lookout. There are few campsites and lodges all along the track.

Marlbrough Sounds Harbour

Nearby Attraction:

If you are visiting during summers, you might like to explore Kaipupu Wildlife Sanctuary for native wildlife and Kiwi bird, on your own canoe.  It is accessible only by a boat ride which is limited to 2 rides per day during winter, a private boat hire may cost 80 NZD. This info is not displayed on their website so confirm at visitor centre before you plan.

Refreshing Tranquility around Pelorus River

Pelorus River

The total drive distance from Picton to Nelson is about 108 km. On the way, a 20 min drive past Havelock brings you to Pelorus Bridge scenic reserve, an essential yet quick stop to take a break. There is a small café from where nature trails begin surrounding clear waters of Pelorus river.

Recommended Dining & Stay

You can find wonderful accommodations as well as food in Nelson located an hour’s drive from Pelorus bridge. We recommend going to East Street Café on 8 church street. Their contemporary interior sets a relaxing ambiance by the fire while you try some delicious vegan bites. Vegan risotto is highly recommended.
